Energia open 9MW wind-farm in Hollyford, Tipperary

Energia open 9MW wind-farm in Hollyford, Tipperary

Energia has announced that they have commenced operations at its newest wind farm at Hollyford, County Tipperary, supplying energy to homes and businesses across Ireland.

Located near the village of Hollyford in County Tipperary, the €19m Hollyford wind farm has the capacity to produce 9MW of renewable electricity.

The main body of the facility’s three turbines stand 75m-tall while their rotor blades have a diameter of 101m.

The Hollyford site was chosen by the company due to its high average wind speeds which have been placed in ‘category one’, the highest wind-to-power ratio.

Energia is one of Ireland’s largest providers of renewable energy with a portfolio of 684 MW of operational renewable electricity capacity, with a further 280MW of wind farm projects currently in development across the country.

Peter Baillie, managing director, Energia Renewables said of the wind farm’s beginning of operations: “We are delighted to be producing sustainable energy in Hollyford and supplying it to businesses around Ireland.

This €19m wind farm represents another significant investment in renewable capacity by Energia. We want to extend a big thank you to the local community for the support it has given this project. The development of Hollyford is a very positive step forward for renewable energy in Ireland and local support for the project is a key element to their success.”

Toshiba to provide combined-cycle thermal power generation system

Toshiba to provide combined-cycle thermal power generation system

Toshiba has been awarded a contract from Hokkaido Electric Power (HEPCO) to provide a high efficiency combined-cycle thermal power generation system for the Ishikariwan Shinko Power Plant Unit 1.

The Ishikariwan Shinko Power Plant Unit 1 is the HEPCO’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueled thermal power plant.

Expected to achieve a thermal efficiency of 62%, the combined-cycle thermal power generation system will feature GE’s high efficiency 9HA gas turbine and Toshiba’s most advanced steam turbine.

Toshiba and GE, through the alliance, will further strengthen cooperation, and their plans to develop highly efficient and environmentally friendly low-NOx and CO2 emission combined-cycle thermal power generation systems while expanding their thermal power generation business globally.

Toshiba Power Systems Company Thermal & Hydro Power Systems & Services Division vice-president Yoshihiro Aburatani said: “Toshiba and GE’s LNG fueled combined-cycle thermal power generation system contributes to achieving the balanced power supply mix, essential for securing long-term stable power supply.”

“The Ishikariwan Shinko Power Plant Unit 1 is the HEPCO’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueled thermal power plant.”

Toshiba will serve as prime contractor for the project.

Scheduled to begin construction in October 2015, the plant is expected to have an output capacity of 569.4MW.

Toshiba and GE will use their experience to promote combined-cycle systems joint marketing to offer the world’s highest level of thermal energy efficiency.

GE Power & Water power generation products vice-president Victor Abate said: “As the centerpiece of Toshiba’s power generation system, GE’s 9HA Gas Turbine provides the highest combined cycle efficiency, power plant availability and unprecedented operational flexibility, while also being more economical in construction, operations and maintainability over the product lifecycle.”

Dublin hosting international energy innovation summit

Dublin hosting international energy innovation summit

Dublin is playing host to one of the world’s largest group of influential thinkers and organisations with regard to clean tech, hosted by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).

The three-day summit sponsored by the ESB got underway yesterday and will finish tomorrow, Thursday 5 June but until then, this International Technology Innovation Summit is providing an opportunity for chief technology officers from across the world to exchange information on the opportunities for technology to shape the future of how we produce and consume electricity.

This will be the third event of its kind with this year’s theme being “The Integrated grid: Realising the full value of central and distributed energy resources.”

As the electricity network has evolved by leveraging generation plants interconnected by transmission grids and feeding distribution networks that supply power to customers.

The focus will be on how the distribution of energy from sources is changing rapidly with the rise of distributed energy resources (DER) such as small natural gas-fuelled generators, combined heat and power plants, electricity storage, and solar photovoltaics (PV) connected to the distribution system.

Building a road map for the future

It is then hoped that this information will help those participating in the summit to develop roadmaps for their own technology development as well as to inform the most critical stakeholders on the policies that will be needed to go hand in hand with technology adoption for a more energy sustainable future.

On the world stage, despite some ups and downs, Ireland is establishing itself as one of the most promising markets for wind energy production going by a global study of utilities, carried out in 2010, which ranked Ireland as having the third-most advanced smart network in the world.

The final day of the summit in the Science Gallery, Dublin will feature a dialogue with senior European and US executives of some of the largest multinationals that have their European headquarters based in Ireland, on their perspective on the energy industry into the future in terms of convergence in the power and ICT industries.
